Across the United States, we are united in our support for the Autism Understanding and Training in School Methodologies for Educators Act of 2013 (“AUTISM Educators Act”) H.R. 1509 and urge you to pass this bill.
The AUTISM Educators Act (H.R. 1509) helps school districts train general education teachers in practices with proven track records of success for teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This bipartisan bill reinforces state and local innovation to reform public education for students with autism, rather than attempt to impose a one size fits all program. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in early 2012 that the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders has increased in the United States to an estimated 1 in 88 children diagnosed by age 8, including 1 in 54 boys. Already there are many students with ASD in general education classrooms; many perform well and even excel in some academic areas but struggle with social and communication tasks. Frequently, general education teachers and staff are not adequately trained to work effectively with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, who have a wide diversity of characteristics. Training will improve educational outcomes for many students and foster a better learning environment for everyone. The AUTISM Educators Act (H.R. 1509) helps meet a critical need in our public schools and provides a cost effective approach for local school districts to better prepare to teach the growing number of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in general education classrooms across the country. Please make it a priority to pass the AUTISM Educators Act (H.R. 1509). |
